What is Gimkit and Why Should You Use It?

Gimkit is a classroom game-based learning platform created by a high school student who wanted to make learning more engaging. It operates on a simple yet effective premise: students answer questions at their own pace on their own devices. For each correct answer, they earn virtual money, which they can then “invest” in power-ups and upgrades to increase their earning potential.

This unique “knowledge and economy” model sets Gimkit apart from other quiz platforms. It introduces an element of strategy that keeps students engaged, even if they aren’t leading on the leaderboard.

The Core Benefits for Teachers and Students

Integrating Gimkit into your teaching offers several distinct advantages:

    • Boosts Engagement: The gamified structure, complete with music, upgrades, and a competitive atmosphere, turns review sessions into an exciting event. Students are not just passively answering questions; they are actively participating in a game.
    • Encourages Mastery: Unlike games where students get one chance per question, Gimkit allows for repeated practice. If a student answers incorrectly, the question will reappear later in the game, providing another opportunity to get it right and reinforce the concept.
    • Provides Actionable Data: After each game, teachers receive a detailed report. This data highlights which questions students struggled with the most and shows individual student performance. This information is invaluable for identifying learning gaps and planning future instruction.
    • Fosters Strategic Thinking: The in-game economy requires students to make decisions. Should they save their money for a big upgrade or spend it on smaller, immediate advantages? This layer of strategy appeals to a wide range of learners and encourages critical thinking.
    • Offers Flexibility: Gimkit can be used for live, in-class games, independent practice, or as a homework assignment. Its various modes and settings allow you to tailor the experience to your specific classroom needs.

Getting Started: Setting Up Your Account

Your journey with Gimkit begins with a simple setup process. The platform offers a free plan, Gimkit Basic, which provides access to all game modes and allows you to create up to five Kits. For educators who want unlimited Kit creation and access to more advanced features, there is a paid subscription, Gimkit Pro.

    Step-by-Step Account Creation

    1. Navigate to the Gimkit Website: Open your web browser and go to the official Gimkit website.
    2. Sign Up: Click the “Sign Up for Free” button. You will be prompted to sign up as an educator. You can create an account using your Google account, which is often the quickest method, or by entering your email and creating a password.
    3. Complete Your Profile: Follow the on-screen prompts to finish setting up your profile. You may be asked to provide your name and your school’s name.
    4. Explore the Dashboard: Once your account is created, you will land on your dashboard. This is your central hub for creating Kits, launching games, and viewing reports. Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the layout. You will see options to create a new Kit, search for existing Kits in the Gimkit gallery, and manage your account settings.

    Creating Your First Game (Kit)

In Gimkit, a game is called a “Kit.” A Kit is essentially a set of questions you create. You can build one from scratch, import questions from a spreadsheet, or borrow from the extensive public gallery.

    Building a Kit from Scratch

    1. Start a New Kit: From your dashboard, click the “New Kit” button. You will be prompted to give your Kit a name, select a language, and choose a subject. A cover image can also be added to make your Kit easily identifiable.
    2. Add Questions: After creating the Kit shell, you’ll be taken to the question editor. Here you can choose your question format. The most common is “Multiple Choice,” but you can also use “Text Input” for short-answer questions.
    3. Write Your Questions and Answers: Type your question into the provided field. For multiple-choice questions, enter at least two answer options and be sure to select the correct one. You can add photos to questions to create visual prompts.
    4. Continue Adding Questions: Click “Add Question” to continue building your Kit. The free plan allows for an unlimited number of questions within your five Kits.
    5. Finish Your Kit: Once you have added all your questions, click “Finish Kit.” Your new game is now saved to your dashboard and ready to be played.

    Using the KitCollab Feature

A fantastic feature for collaborative work is KitCollab. When creating a Kit, you can generate a special link to share with your students. Students can then use this link to contribute their own questions to the Kit. This is an excellent way to have students create their own study guide or review game, promoting ownership over their learning.

Launching a Game and Engaging Your Students

With your Kit ready, it’s time to play. Gimkit offers a variety of game modes, each providing a different experience. “Classic” and “Team Mode” are excellent starting points.

How to Host a Live Game

    1. Select Your Kit: From your dashboard, choose the Kit you want to use.
    2. Click “Play Live”: This will take you to the game options screen.
    3. Choose a Game Mode: You will see a list of available modes. “Classic” is a free-for-all where every student plays for themselves. “Teams” divides the class into groups that work together to earn money. There are also many other creative modes, like “The Floor is Lava” or “Trust No One,” which add unique rules and objectives.
    4. Set Game Options: Before launching, you can customize the game. You can set a time limit, a race to a specific cash goal, or let the game end when one player reaches the maximum amount. You can also adjust settings like starting cash and whether players can see the leaderboard.
    5. Launch the Game: Once you are ready, click “Continue.” Gimkit will generate a unique game code.
    6. Students Join the Game: Instruct your students to go to gimkit.com/join on their devices and enter the game code. They will then be prompted to enter their name.
    7. Start Playing: Once all your students are in the lobby, you can start the game. Project the main game screen for the class to see the leaderboard and other game events.

    Integrating Gimkit into Your Classroom

Gimkit is more than just a fun activity; it’s a versatile instructional tool. Here are some effective ways to integrate it into your teaching:

    • Pre-Assessment: Use a quick game at the beginning of a unit to gauge students’ prior knowledge. The post-game report will show you which topics need the most focus.
    • Formative Assessment & Review: This is the most common use. Host a game before a test or quiz to review key concepts in an engaging way. The repetition of incorrect questions helps solidify understanding.
    • Homework Assignments: Assign a Kit as homework for independent practice. You can set a target cash amount that students must reach to complete the assignment. This gives them control over how much time they need to spend to master the material.
    • Station Rotations: Set up Gimkit as one of the stations in a rotation activity. This allows a smaller group of students to play while others are engaged in different tasks.
    • Exit Tickets: Use a short, five-question Kit as an exit ticket to quickly check for understanding of the day’s lesson.

A Powerful Tool for the Modern Educator

Gimkit provides a unique and effective way to drive student engagement and reinforce learning. Its blend of academic content and strategic gameplay creates an environment where students are motivated to practice and master new information. The platform’s ease of use for teachers, combined with the valuable data it provides, makes it a standout choice for any classroom.

Whether you are looking to energize your review sessions, gather formative assessment data, or simply bring a new level of excitement to your lessons, Gimkit is a tool worth exploring. Start with the free plan, create your first Kit, and watch as your students embrace learning in a whole new way.
